There are a couple of common reasons someone may want an areola repigmentation procedure. It can be to treat a scar post-surgery, improve nipple color and shape or reconstruct the appearance of a nipple completely.

Areola/Nipple Simulation

This procedure is for patients post breast reconstruction, after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. This procedure uses a cosmetic tattoo technique, that should only be applied by a trained professional, using a skin-colored pigment to create the appearance of an areola.

Areola size or color adjustment

The color of an areola can be adjusted or improved with a similar process. Some women may have a change in areola color for many reasons, it could be something you are born with, post breastfeeding, or post-surgery. The size of an areola can also be adjusted.

Areola scar camouflage

Breast enhancement procedures are about as common as buying a new car and many of them require an incision around the areola to place the implant. Because of this incision area, a scar may appear as a round circle surrounding the nipple. A scar’s appearance can be softened, blended, or reduced by tattooing the areola scar using corrective pigment camouflage techniques.

It is important to only see a trained professional who has experience treating these issues, as the areola is a very sensitive part of the body and if not done properly can cause infections or problems for the patient.
