Selecting the perfect permanent makeup artist can be stressful, especially if this is your first procedure. It can also get a little overwhelming on who to pick since there are so many options out there. But the biggest advice we can give you, DO NOT SETTLE. You may get a little anxious and impatient during the process because you are excited to finally get permanent makeup, but please take it slow and do your research. There are many botched horror stories in the industry, and Alicia Shapira has had to fix hundreds of terrible tattooed brows, eyeliner that has turned green, and uneven lip liner!

There are tons of permanent makeup artists in our area to choose from, but here are some criteria you can follow to make sure you’re going to someone reputable and safe:

  1. Has a Vast Portfolio with Excellent Client Reviews

Social media is so big now, that it should be easy to access the artists’ work at the tip of your fingers. Before and after photos, and videos, are the best way for an artist to showcase their work to the public. Proof of their procedures and reviews from clients who were actually happy with the work is of utmost importance.

  1. The Work is Consistent and Active

A great artist will have no problem showing work he/she does on a daily basis. This is a great way to tell your artist practices, is up to date with all their licenses and documentation, and results are true. Also try to look for an artist that watermarks his/her work. There are lots of fakes out there who steal photos, and try to claim as their own.

  1. Your Questions are Never a Bother

A true artist will never sound annoyed with you, no matter how many questions you need answered. This is what consultations are for, of course! The more the artist tells you, the more obvious it is they know what they are doing and what they are talking about. You can always double check the information by searching the web.

  1. Honesty is the Best Policy

So many artists will give false information and false hope to lure you into their salon. Make sure the artist informs you of possible outcomes of permanent makeup that may be affected by skin types, lifestyles, etc. This is a true sign the artist cares for your well-being, and is willing to educate you in your consultation, and during your procedure to make sure you are comfortable with knowing how to handle aftercare.

  1. They Make you Feel at Home

Don’t go with anyone who doesn’t make you feel calm and relaxed. Ask to schedule a consultation with your selected artist before your appointment, and get to know their personality, their work, their process and see if it makes you comfortable. Don’t be too quick to leap- check out multiple salons and compare artist work and how you were treated.

The more research you do, the more you can filter who meets your standards and who doesn’t. It will actually make you feel more comfortable knowing you made the right choice after doing your homework. Don’t always look for a cheap price as motivation for you to choose the artist. We get it, times can be tough, but saving your money for someone who will actually do it right the first time, without question, is more worth it than having to spend hundreds of dollars extra in correction work!
