Alicia Shapira is no stranger to change— about seven years ago, she was a speech-language pathologist who decided she wanted to walk down a new career path. Today, she is an academy teacher and owner of New Image Beauty Bar.
And, now, her beauty business has just undergone another change. She has moved to a new location in Coral Springs, the city where she grew up and lived in for almost three decades, before moving to Parkland.
Previously located in the Target plaza on Wiles Road and US 441, New Image Beauty Bar moved in July to 7401 Wiles Rd in Suite #252 in the Whispering Woods Center—as Shapira sought a larger, more private space.
New Image Beauty Bar offers a range of makeup, hair, body, and face services that include lash lift and tints, permanent makeup, hair simulation, and vitamin glow scar treatments.
The beauty bar, as well as the academy Shapira runs, attracts clients and students from around the country and world, she said, especially because of their unique specializations.
In addition to permanent makeup, fibroblast, and micro-needling, they also specialize in 3D areola repigmentation and Brazilian stretchmark and scar camouflaging. In fact, Shapira said she was proud to be the first person in the United States to be trained in the practice.
Shapira learned to perform the procedure from its creator, Rodolpho Torres, from Brazil—now, she not only offers it to her clients but also trains others to do it.
“People travel here from all over the world, from Singapore to Hawaii to the Netherlands, to travel and learn about [stretch mark camouflage],” she said.
Despite her success, with the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, threatening lives, and livelihoods, many small businesses, including hers, felt the consequences.
“It was very scary. I didn’t know if we were all going to make it,” said Shapira.
But, she’s adjusted—and the beauty bar currently sees one client at a time and operates by appointment to allow for teaching at the academy when they aren’t seeing clients.
Now, she spends her days evenly split between teaching and seeing clients.
“Being a teacher in this industry and seeing others succeed because of me is very cool,” she said.
Mentoring is important to her, as is building relationships with clients. She also offers 3D areola repigmentation, and eyebrows, to former breast cancer patients for free.
A service that can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, repigmentation is often the final step in breast reconstruction for those with breast cancer. Shapira is happy to offer it at no cost, and as her own father is currently battling stomach cancer, it’s more near and dear to her heart than ever.
“In October alone, I did between five and ten for free,” she said.
Whatever clients come in for, she loves that people often leaving feeling better than they did when they walked in, and she’s passionate about adding to their confidence.
